Echoes are traces that never fade. In Camamu, in southern Bahia, the cries of the Quilombolas from 1692 still ring out: “Death to the whites, long live freedom!” So does the struggle of my grandfather, a Quilombola leader who was murdered in 2020. Grandma and I walk alongside these voices to find out, once and for all, what killed them.
