Weenta Girmay is the Regional Initiatives Coordinator for Firelight Media. In this role, she supports the Director of Regional Initiatives to organize Firelight's Groundwork Regional Lab and HOMEGROWN Shorts Series. Her background is in independent film producing with a focus on telling southern stories and supporting underrepresented filmmakers. Her past work has been supported by the Tribeca Film Institute, screened at the New Orleans Film Festival, and featured on NPR. In both 2019 and 2021 she was selected as a New Orleans Film Society Southern Producers Lab Fellow. She has also served as the Program Manager for the New Orleans Film Festival's South Pitch and is an active member of Brown Girls Doc Mafia.
Weenta is based in Orleans, LA where she has lived since 2015. She is an Eritrean-American, originally from the Washington D.C. area.
