The team at Firelight Media was shocked and saddened to learn of Sylvia Bugg’s passing. Sylvia most recently served as PBS’s Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming. Her leadership was integral to PBS’s support for Firelight Media’s programs, and her decades of service to public media included multiple positions at PBS and several years at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

It is impossible to overstate Sylvia’s dedication to and impact on public media. Her commitment to providing a diversity of perspectives in PBS’s programming — which is core to its mission — has been transformational for audiences, for independent filmmakers, and for Firelight Media. I speak for the entire Firelight Media team when I say that she will be sorely missed.

My colleague Stanley Nelson, Co-Founder of Firelight Media, shared the following:

“I had the great pleasure of working with Sylvia for decades, beginning with her first stint at PBS in the 90s. Throughout her time at PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Sylvia was an incredible colleague whom I could always count on to support my films and my work with Firelight. She was passionately committed to diversifying PBS’s programming long before that became a national trend.”

“In addition to supporting PBS’s mission to educate, entertain, and inspire, Sylvia supported the individual missions of the dozens of independent filmmakers she championed, always ensuring they had a seat at the table. I encourage all of us to continue the fight for a more just and beautiful future, as Sylvia did throughout her life and career.”

On a personal note, I want to highlight Sylvia’s contributions as a Black woman in public media leadership and honor all she did to ensure that communities of color were genuinely represented and heard in the programs she led. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Sylvia’s family, friends, and colleagues.
