Future of Documentary | Loira Limbal (Firelight Media)

"We believe that cultural change precedes social and political change... That's why we do this work. The rest of it is a means to an end. But we have to be clear about what the actual end is."

Loira Limbal is a multidisciplinary artist and the President and CEO of Firelight Media, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting, resourcing, and advocating for documentary filmmakers of color. She joined the organization 16 years ago and has led the expansion of the Documentary Lab, launched the Groundwork Regional Lab, the William Greaves Research and Development Fund, the Impact Campaign Fund, and the In the Making documentary short film series.

In our conversation, we discuss:

  • What the loss of public media dollars means for arts organizations
  • External and internal motivations in documentary work
  • The opportunity created with streamers and public funding ‘gone’
  • Why decentralization is a great outcome for independent film
  • The parallels between the journalism crisis and where documentary film is today
  • And more!
