Chavela

Chavela Vargaas was a badass who went onstage in 1950s Roman Catholic Mexico wearing pants and a poncho, smoking cigars, swilling tequila, and carrying a pistol, while singing love songs to women. Through its lyrical structure, the film takes viewers on an evocative, thought-provoking journey through the life of this iconoclastic, game-changing artist. Centered around never-before-seen interview footage of Chavela shot 20 years before her death in 2012, the film weaves an arresting portrait of a woman who dared to dress, speak, sing, and dream her unique life into being.
