Firelight Media, the premier destination for non-fiction cinema by and about communities of color, announced today that it has received three nominations and one Webby Honor from the 28th Annual Webby Awards. Hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by The New York Times, The Webby Awards, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), is the leading international awards organization honoring excellence on the Internet.

Firelight Media’s three Webby Award nominations are from season 2 of its In the Making documentary short film series produced in partnership with PBS American Masters. The nominees – listed below — are also eligible to win Webby People’s Voice Awards, which are voted online by fans across the globe. In the Making, a documentary short film series produced in partnership with PBS American Masters, follows emerging cultural icons on their journeys to becoming masters of their artistic disciplines. Season twohas been recognized with a Webby Award nomination in the Video (Series) — Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion category.

Senghor Reid: Make Way for Tomorrow, directed by Desmond Love and Eden Sabolboro, is nominated in the Video — Documentary: Longform category. The film profiles visual artist Senghor Reid as he draws inspiration from current events and his hometown of Detroit. Reid’s colorful and evocative paintings of strange yet familiar subjects inspire audiences with future visions of hope and possibility.

Ethan Lim: Cambodian Futures, directed by Dustin Nakao-Haider, is nominated in the Video — Food & Drink category. The film follows Chicago-based chef Ethan Lim as he creates vibrant dishes inspired by the rich, complex history of Cambodia. Drawing on his family’s culinary legacy of over half a century, Lim’s award-winning cooking imagines how Cambodian cuisine might have evolved had the civil war not paused its growth.

Firelight Media also received a Webby Honor for Black Strings, directed by Marquise Mays, part of the Homegrown: Future Visions series produced in partnership with PBS Digital Studios and the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM). Black Strings follows The Black String Triage Ensemble, a group of Black and Latinx musicians in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as it performs at crime scenes in the immediate aftermath of tragic events. Together, the group seeks to alter the notion of first responders.
