RISA MORIMOTO | Code Red

Code Red is a feature documentary that examines how the Internet is transforming Chinese politics and society as China enters its seventh decade under communist rule. The film asks how the Chinese people are using the Internet to address human rights and achieve social justice and how an autocratic communist government is reacting to this increasingly powerful democratic medium. Code Red looks at several recent pivotal events within China in which the Internet has become a complex testing ground for the flow and control of information—an area of struggle between a central government trying to defend and protect national unity, known to the Chinese as “harmonizing,” and a vast people’s desire for freedom of expression and online access. The film presents a multifaceted look at the issues, interviewing key players and a range of parties involved in what is both a domestic struggle and, increasingly, an ongoing international debate.
