Mr. SOUL! Ellis Haizlip and the Birth of Black Power TV is a documentary about SOUL!-- television’s first “Black Tonight Show.” On the heels of the Civil Rights Movement, from 1968 to 1973 broadcast pioneer Ellis Haizlip gave radical voice to the struggles and successes of the black experience. The film explores the groundbreaking PBS series from its genesis to its eventual loss of funding against the backdrop of a swiftly changing political and social landscape, while profiling the charismatic gay man behind one of the most culturally significant and successful television shows in U.S. history. Melissa received research and development support for Mr. SOUL! from the National Black Programming Consortium. She is currently raising funds for production. In April 2012, Mr. SOUL! was one of eleven documentaries chosen to receive an Arts In Media grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information, please visit
